Chiang Mai is one of the main tourist destinations in Thailand and an important historical and cultural center of the country with a large number of educational and religious sites. The city is located in a mountainous area and is a major transportation hub of the Thai Highlands region. It is Thailand’s second largest population center and an important economic partner of the country’s capital.

Traffic is heavy all year round, but usually a large number of students return home in winter for the New Year holidays. At this time, demand increases significantly. During the vacation season, prices are surprisingly low.

Flights to this destination are operated by Thai Smile, a subsidiary of Thai Airways, which operates Airbus A320-200 planes. Don’t be surprised if you book a ticket on the Thai Airways website but fly on another operator. Thai Airways has several partners domestically, though most flights are operated by Thai Smile.

Tickets become extremely expensive in early December and can increase by 40% compared to May or September when demand is minimal. If you want to go to the mountains of Thailand, it’s best to get tickets for the summer.

Within the week, demand is highest for the weekend, and so try to fly out on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Book your tickets 90 days before your scheduled departure. The discount gets smaller every day until departure!
